Abstract
Materials are the ingredients used to create the technologies that surround us. In recent decades, structural materials have evolved from single-component metals to composites or engineered combinations of multiple constituents. Composites are used in numerous sectors, from aerospace to sporting goods. However, their importance and complexity are often overlooked by the general public. Join us for an informative and entertaining discussion of what composite materials are, why they’re used in SpaceX rockets, Formula 1 cars, hockey sticks and prosthetic limbs, and how state-of-the-art science and engineering research is used to address major technological, environmental and social challenges.
