The theory of the Big Bang explains how rocks came into existence and the theory of evolution explains how a simple cell evolved into complex beings. But how do you go from the stuff that makes up rocks to the stuff that makes up us? I will attempt to demystify the processes and intermediary steps that connect rocks to humans and in doing so, maybe we can discuss what it really means to be alive.
Dr. Hamed Mirzaei received his PhD in genetics from USF and later moved to LA to join the USC School of Gerontology, where he studied the impact of genetics and diet on age-related metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disorders.
During his last year as a graduate student, he developed a course titled, “The Public Understanding of Science,” which he taught at the USF Honors College and later at the University of Southern California.
In April of 2014 Hamed launched the Hamed Mirzaei Foundation for Arts and Sciences, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on fostering public science awareness. He has made science education a priority in his career and strives to find ways to further educate the community outside of traditional academia.
